South African Firearm Application Process

Complete guide to applying for a firearm license in South Africa

South African Firearms Control Act provides different license categories

Section 13 - Self Defence

For individuals requiring a firearm for personal protection. Requires strong motivation demonstrating genuine need for self-defense.

Section 15 - Occasional Hunting

For individuals who hunt or participate in sport shooting occasionally. No dedicated status required.

Section 16 - Dedicated Status

For dedicated hunters and sport shooters. Requires active membership with an accredited association and dedicated status.

Basic Requirements
What you need before applying for a firearm license
  • South African citizen or permanent resident (21 years or older)
  • Valid Competency Certificate Card (SAPS) issued
  • Proof of firearm purchase with firearm information
  • Training and competency certificate documentation
  • Certified copy of ID and two Passport Photos
  • Proof of residential address (not older than 3 months)
  • Proof of Safe storage. (attached Photos of safe meeting SAPS specification)
  • Written motivation letter (Prepared using FirearmApp SA)
  • Endorsement letter from hunting association
  • Download and completed SAPS Form 271Download PDF
  • Check and book appointment by your designated firearm office (Police Station)
  • Application Fee R200 at Police Station
